Sylvia Kickert

Sylvia Kickert, age 84, of Minot, passed away with her family by her side on August 11, 2017, at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday.
Sylvia was born October 23, 1932, the daughter of Wilbur and Edna (Gustafson) Loughead in Clinton, MN. Sylvia graduated from Minot Model High School in 1950. After graduating from high school, she went on to get her nursing degree at the Sisters of St. Francis School of Nursing, graduating in 1954. She worked for 40 years as a registered nurse, starting her career as a staff nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital and then went on to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in many departments. During her 40 years of nursing, she served as treasurer for North Dakota Association of Infection Practitioners and nurse representative on the ND State AIDS Task Force. She was a founding member of the ND Association for Healthcare Quality of which she received an outstanding member award.
Sylvia was also a member of the VFW Post 753 Auxiliary for 13 years in many capacities. When she retired, she volunteered at the Souris Valley Animal Shelter helping with fund raising and pet therapy at numerous nursing homes/assisted living centers. She always said she was not sure who got the most of out of the pet therapy; the residents, the dogs, or herself.
Her other loves included crocheting, reading, visiting her children/grandchildren, and of course her husband of 62 years.
On January 8, 1955, Sylvia married William (Bill) Kickert at St. Leo’s Church in Minot, ND. In their 62 years of marriage, they lived in Biloxi, MS, Chicago, IL, Minot, ND and the last 2 years in Bismarck, ND.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Kickert of Bismarck, ND; four children, Lisa (Arlan) Krebsbach, Minot, ND; Bill (Aileen) Kickert, Bismarck, ND; Cindy (Randy) Severson, Rochester, MN; and Steve (Teresa) Kickert, Shakopee, MN; nine grandchildren, Aaron (Liz) Krebsbach, Michelle (Bob) Senger, Cassie Kickert, Krista Frederick, Katie (Brent) Berning, Liz (Nate) Vreeman, Jenny (Jake) Schnelle, Becca Kickert, and Sarah Kickert; seven great-grandchildren, James Krebsbach, Jorja Kickert, Pyper Frederick, Myles Frederick, Elise Vreeman, Brecken Berning, and William Kickert; two sisters and one brother, Barbara (Tom) Bertino, Saratoga Springs, NY; Yvonne Christenson, Baton Rouge, LA; and Del (Carol) Loughead, Minot, ND; and sister-in-law, Jean Nichols, Aurora, IL.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Edna (Gustafson) Loughead; sister, Phylis Gorze; brother, Lowell Loughead; and her beloved dogs.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot, ND or to the animal shelter of their choice.
