Ruth Renken, 87, Bismarck, passed away on December 3, 2016, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, surrounded by family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, December 11, 2016, at ALC/UCC church in Flasher, ND with Pastoral Intern, Bethany Haberstroh officiating. Burial will be at Fairhill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 pm on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday.
Ruth was born December 17, 1928, in Elgin, ND to August and Mathilda (Sprenger) Finck. She grew up in the Elgin area. Ruth married Leo Renken on January 22, 1948, in Selfridge, ND. Together they made their home on the farm near Freda, and in 1966 they moved to Flasher, where they spent their remaining years together. They were married for 55 years when Leo passed away in 2003.
Throughout the years, Ruth worked in the Flasher Post Office, Credit Union, Meyer's Café, and for the Flasher Public School. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, putting puzzles together, reading books, and going to the casino. Ruth loved gardening and challenged herself to outproducing the garden she grew the year before.
Ruth was very proud of getting her GED around the age of 52. In her later years, she dedicated the majority of her time to lovingly care for her husband Leo and her oldest son Darrell in their battles with Huntington's disease. Ruth was also a member of the American Lutheran Church and the 55 Club of Flasher, ND.
Blessed to have shared her life are her five children, Gordon Renken, Crosby, Doreen (Duane) Leingang, Mandan, Sharon (George) Hopkins, Mandan, Donald Renken, Flasher, and Doug Renken, Flasher; five grandchildren, Eric, Candy, and Jesse Leingang, Jared Hopkins, and Allison Renken; three great grandchildren, Kylie Leingang, William Hopkins, and Alex Leingang; three sisters, Bernice Mueller, Portland, OR, Hilda Renken, Mandan, and Norma (Stan) Nelson, Vancouver, WA; and one brother, Leroy (Ann) Finck, Milwaukie, OR.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; two sons, Darrell and Randy Renken; granddaughter, Jessica Leingang; and grandson, Billy Joe Hopkins.
