Roy was born March 22, 1923 at his family home in rural Mandan, the son of Roy C. Sr. and Edna (Galloway) Hogan. Roy’s mother died shortly after Roy’s birth. He attended rural grade school in ND and then stayed with family in Rushville, Illinois during his high school years. Roy worked briefly in Idaho before returning to take over the family farm in 1943. A talented horseman, Roy broke many horses in the 40’s, riding them for a week, earning five or ten dollars for each horse. On May 15, 1946 Roy married Beverly Rask in Mandan. He was a member of the Stone Lutheran Church and served as Director of Mandan’s Rural Fire Department for many years.
Family traditions were important to Roy. He especially enjoyed family get togethers on Saturday mornings, when he and Beverly made Swedish pancakes. He always had a lot of horse and old timer stories to share with family and friends.
Blessed to have shared his life is his wife of nearly 65 years, Beverly, Mandan; three children, Rodney (Bonnie) Hogan and Steve (Mary) Hogan, both of Mandan, and Marcia (Dave) Otte, Detroit Lakes, MN; 10 grandchildren, Dan (Holly) Fix, Kimberly Fix, Stephanie (Travis) Entzel, Katie (John) Bahm, Kyle Hogan (fiancée, Jess Koester), Alexis and Emily Hogan, Jennifer (Scott) Unger, Shane Engel, and Alex Owens; eight great-grandchildren, Gregory & Asher Fix, Grace & Lucas Entzel, Anna & Owen Bahm, and Aidan & Addison Unger; and sisters-in-law, Verdis Hogan, Mandan and Genevieve Weiss and Gladys Duncan, both of New Salem.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Cecil, Glen, Robert (Mildred), and Harold (Betty) Hogan; sisters, Grace Hogan, Doris (Clem) McEvoy, Gertie Root, and Harriet Hogan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Esther (Murphy) Christianson, Julia (Bill) Glardon, Art Weiss, Floyd Duncan, Gerda (Emil) Toman, Alice (Frank) Toman, Ted (Esther) Rask, Arnold (Dorothy) Rask, and Carl (Lucille) Rask; and grandsons, Patrick Hogan and Shawn Engel.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Stone Lutheran Cemetery or First Lutheran Church of Mandan.
