Ron was born April 27, 1950, in Mandan to Jack R. and Florence (Markel) Schaaf. Raised and educated in Mandan, he graduated from Mandan High School in 1968. Ron enlisted in the US Navy in 1969. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1973. On June 26, 1976, he married Vicky Fleck and they made their home in Mandan where they raised their two children, Andrea and Rory. Ron worked as warehouse manager for Cloverdale Foods and later at U.S. Foods, retiring in 2012. He spent his retirement enjoying his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling to Madison, Wisconsin to visit his son, Rory’s family. Ron loved cooking, camping, fishing, playing guitar, and his “drives around the world.” Ron always enjoyed his conversations with family, friends and sometimes complete strangers. He loved being outdoors, especially in the Black Hills and the mountains of Montana. He liked spending time in Deadwood and gambling there once in awhile. Some of his greatest memories were around the campfire in his backyard and on walks with his wife, Vicky. A loving and involved dad, Ron could be counted on for support and advice to his kids, whether they wanted it or not. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Ron will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Blessed to have shared his life is his wife of 41 years, Vicky Schaaf, Mandan; children, Andrea (Scott) Leingang, Mandan and Rory (Jen) Schaaf, Verona, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Brady and Ramsey Leingang and Maddox Schaaf; sisters, Rosemary Beer and Sue (Ken) Zander, all of Mandan; brothers, Ben Schaaf, Tom (Carol) Schaaf, and Jack (Maralyn) Schaaf, all of Mandan; mother-in-law, Betty Fleck; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces and nephews, each of whom was special to him.
