Mavis A. Hoesel, 83, of Mandan, formerly of New Salem, ND, passed away March 4, 2023 at Sanford Health in Bismarck.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Peace Church in New Salem.
Mavis was born July 4, 1939, to Edgar and Ella (Westmeyer) Norton at a farm south of New Salem. She graduated from New Salem High School and attended Dickinson College earning a teaching certificate. Mavis was a very social person and was active in the New Salem Peach Church, Women’s Guild, Women’s Life, and three bridge clubs. She married Lester Hoesel on June 27, 1958. They had one child, Blane Hoesel (JoAnne Maier). Mavis loved traveling and her travels included Hawaii, Alaska, Dominican Republic, and Australia. Mavis had a love of wildlife, fishing, coyote hunting, and her flower garden. She lived in New Salem until 2019 when she became ill. She then moved to Edgewood assisted living in Mandan. While living there, she was active in many activities and enjoyed their outings for shopping, eating, and sightseeing. She continued to travel to Prairie Knights Casino until mid January 2023. This was such an enjoyable thing for her, and she never passed up an opportunity to go.
Mavis is survived by her son, Blane and daughter-in-law, JoAnne, Bismarck; her nephews, Lorren Hoger (wife Jeannie) of New Salem, and Larry Hoger (wife Debby) of Washington state; and her niece, Brenda Winckler (husband Daryl) of New Salem.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lester, her parents Ed and Ella Norton, and her brother-in-law Lawrence Hoger, and sister in-law, Dorothy Hoger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the donor’s choice of charity in Mavis’ name.
