Matthew G. “Matt” Koffler, 95, Mandan, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with Reverend Marvin Klemmer celebrating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan with a parish rosary/ vigil at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Matt was born November 22, 1917 in Dickinson to Joseph and Anna (Dietz) Koffler. He was raised south of Dickinson where he received his education at a country school. Matt married Ruth Nelson on June 25, 1940 in Dickinson. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Army Air Force and proudly served his country. Matt and Ruth owned and operated the Queen City Motel in Dickinson. In 1958, they moved to Bismarck and later to rural Mandan, where they spent the last 60 years. Matt’s many interests included traveling to buy cattle and playing gin rummy. Once his grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, he spent his days working hard on the ranch and his nights relaxing surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Matt was also a talented carpenter. His heart was always with his wife, who died in October 2005.
Matt is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Shirley Koffler, Hollywood, Florida and John and Vicki Koffler, Mandan; seven grandchildren, Patrick (Sharri) Koffler, Miramar, FL, Howard (Jodi) Koffler, Boynton Beach, FL, Sherri Locandro, Dania Beach, FL, Sarah (Brian) Heinert, Mandan, Megan (Luigi) Spasiano, Hollywood, FL, Kaitlin “Katie” Koffler, and Danielle “Bubba” Koffler, both of Mandan; and five great grandchildren, Isabella Danielle, Graciella Hadley, Brayden Matthew “Little Matt”, Ellisia Ruth, and Keira Lee. Matt was also looking forward to the birth of his sixth great grandchild “Baby Heinert” in October.
Matt was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; their son, Ronald; his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara (Marcus) Obrigewitsch, Otilia (Charlie) Whitehead, Mary (Cecil) Plummer, Ann (Sidney) Branham, and Rose (Joseph) Frenzel; and brothers and sister-in-law, George (Anna) Koffler, and John Koffler.
