Mary was born September 24, 1930, in Portal, ND, to William and Sadie (Chapman) Prim. She was raised and educated in Portal, graduating from high school in 1948. Mary attended Fargo Business College for one year, and then worked for Kelly Brothers IH dealership and later at the Veterans Administration in Fargo. On June 23, 1951, she married Arlow V. Nelson in Flaxton, ND. They later moved to Jamestown, where they lived from 1954-1977. Mary worked in the Development Office at Jamestown College, and she and Arlow became the proud parents of four children: Keith, Carol, Bruce, and Rodney. In 1977, the family moved to Mandan, where she worked for two years at Production Credit Association (PCA). Mary loved planting and watching her flowers grow. She also enjoyed water exercise class in Mandan which she attended for many years and reading several books at one time. In her younger years, Mary and Arlow loved to spend their Saturday evenings dancing.
Most of all, Mary loved those around her with complete and total selflessness. Whether cheering on her family's every milestone, or gathering relatives and friends around her special meatball dinners. Mary's kindness, patience, thoughtfulness, generosity, and faith have deeply touched and inspired all who knew her. The light of her love will continue to guide our paths and be reflected in generations to come.
Blessed to have shared her life is her husband of 64 years, Arlow Nelson, Mandan; one daughter, Carol (Barry) Beechie, Mandan; three sons, Keith (Carmelle) Nelson, Fargo, Bruce (Mary) Nelson, Avondale, AZ, and Rodney (Denise) Nelson, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, and Matthew Nelson, Tucker and Leanne Beechie, and Cole Nelson; one sister, Ina Swett, Seattle, WA; a brother, Wilbur (Lynda) Prim, Camarillo, CA; and special friends, Willis and Eunice Shasky, Breckenridge, MN.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pauline Bruner and Charlotte Jensen; and four brothers, George, Bernard, Frank, and Raymond Prim.
