Marvin Schulz, 92, of New Salem, ND, passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Elm Crest Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 28, 2025, at United Church of Christ, 1200 E. Highland Acres Road, Bismarck. Burial will take place in Peace Cemetery, New Salem. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Marvin was born on April 11, 1932, in Rosebud, ND, to George and Bertha (Rabe) Schulz. He graduated from New Salem High School in 1950. After graduation he worked on his family farm alongside his father.
On October 26, 1952, Marvin married Laverne Starck, and together, they operated their own farm south of Judson, which included a dairy operation. While building up their farm, Marvin worked numerous jobs, including as a carpenter in the Kaelbearer coal mine, driving truck during the construction of I-94, and providing custom bailing services for his neighbors. Marvin attended business school after his heart attack in 1968. Due to his health complications, Marvin had to step away from farming.
A devoted member of the Peace United Church of Christ, Marvin was also a charter member of the Salem UCC, where he served as a council member for six years. He was an active member of Bismarck United Church of Christ and served as secretary for the Missouri Valley Association of the United Church of Christ.
Marvin was actively involved in his community, including membership in the New Salem Sportsmen’s Club, where he served as president, secretary, and treasurer, as well as the New Salem Fire Department and the New Salem Historical Society. After moving to New Salem in 1978, Marvin worked as city auditor and was the maintenance supervisor at Elm Crest Manor.
His hobbies included gardening, woodworking, cooking, hunting, and fishing. Marvin will be remembered for his unwavering willingness to help anyone in need, always without expecting anything in return.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 72 years, Laverne; children, Ron (Laurel) Schulz and Murrae Kramer; grandchildren, Brandon (Danielle) Schulz and their children, Lydia and Malcolm, Allison (Jon) Engelstad and their children, Riley, Isaak, Jace, Ian, Kade, and Amelia, Colton (Alisa) Schulz and their children, Kyler, Ryker, and Aria, and Deidre (Tyler) Hughes and their son, Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Gary, son-in-law Brad Kramer, and his brothers, Willard, Kenneth, and Glenn.
Marvin’s legacy of kindness, service, and generosity will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and his community.
