Lewis Shaw, 97, Mandan, died August 31, 2017 at Edgewood Vista, Mandan.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. Christina Martin officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Lewis was born to LaRue and Alice (Nichols) Shaw in February 1920. He grew up on a farm with six other siblings, attended rural elementary school, and attended Mandan High School and the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. In 1942 he was drafted into the Army and saw combat in North Africa and Italy. Lewis received the Purple Heart and was discharged in 1945. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas where he met and married Elsie Wollenberg who was working at the Kansas State College Library in Manhattan, Kansas.
Lewis was chairman of the Mandan Ambassadors, President of the Jaycees, held all offices in the Mandan Lions Club and became District Governor of 5NW. He attended First Lutheran Church and was church treasurer for a number of years, held membership in the Elks, Lions, Legion, VFW, and Disabled Veterans, and was clerk of the Park Board for eleven years. Lewis worked for 33 years for the Production Credit Association (now called Farm Credit Services of Mandan), being the CEO the last eleven years. Lewis enjoyed gardening, playing golf, hunting, and fishing.
He leaves his wife of 72 years, Elsie Shaw, Mandan; two daughters, Cindy (Brad) Forbrook, Alexandria, MN and Sheila (Steven) Kastama, Eatonville, WA; one son, Gregg Shaw, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Cory (Kim) Forbrook, Washington, D.C., Chelsea Forbrook, Minneapolis, MN, Gretchen (John) Tibbetts, Puyallup, WA, and Beth (Mitchell) McWilliams, Eatonville, WA; one brother, Donald (Honey) Shaw, Mandan; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews..
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers and two sisters-in-law.
