Leslie R Metzger, 86, passed away August 19, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home in Mandan with Rev. Deanna Reikow presiding. Prayer service and burial will be at 11 AM on Friday, September 22 at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors.
Leslie was born December 7, 1936, in Hebron, ND the son of Jacob C Metzger and Leona Kitzan. Les married Carol J Hatzenbuehler on October 23, 1965, in Hebron, ND. They made their home in Mandan, ND.
Growing up he worked on his grandfather’s farm, worked at the Butcher Shop in Hebron, ND and then enlisted in the Army in October of 1962. After returning home from the Army, he worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and retired from there after 41 years.
Les was nicknamed “Shadow”, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, collecting cars, playing pinochle and loved listening to music. His greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren.
Leslie will be forever loved and remembered by his surviving family, son Leslie D Metzger; daughters, Renee (Matt) Meidinger and Denise Metzger; son in law Jeff Hatzenbuhler; six grandchildren, Amanda (Willie) Kist, Josh Meidinger, Darrick (Deborah) Hatzenbuhler, Jennifer Meidinger, Dylan Hatzenbuhler and Devin Hatzenbuhler, a brother Dennis Metzger, sister Esther Voltz and sister-in-law Cleone Hatzenbuehler along with several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his spouse Carol Metzger, daughter Kim Hatzenbuhler, parents Jacob and Leona Metzger, three brothers Lloyd Metzger, Richard Metzger, Calvin Metzger. Two brothers in law, Duane Hatzenbuehler and Leo Voltz, three sisters in law, Linda Metzger, Laverne Metzger and Lenora Metzger.
