Leonard D. Helfrich, 82, Mandan, died March 2, 2012 at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 5, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with Reverend Charles Heidt celebrating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Parish Vigil / Rosary at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Leonard was born September 21, 1929 in Mandan to Joseph and Margaret (Haider) Helfrich. He grew up on the family farm south of St. Anthony where he also attended school. Leonard began his music career at the age of 14, playing the accordion and piano. He was a self-taught musician who loved to entertain with over 165 songs, playing at local barn dances, weddings, and night clubs. On October 21, 1953 Leonard married Vivian Schultz at St. Martin’s Church in Huff. They raised their family in the Bismarck/Mandan area. Leonard left the farm and began a career as a General Contractor and worked for various construction companies. He was also a talented craftsman and finish carpenter. Later, due to health reasons, he left the construction industry and volunteered and was later employed at Heartview Foundation. He also operated a sharpening business in Mandan. Leonard lost his wife of 57 years to Parkinson’s disease on February 22, 2010.
Leonard is survived by seven children, David (Reyne) Helfrich, Daniel (Carmella) Helfrich, Paulette Mertz, Kenneth Helfrich, Patrick Helfrich, Lynette Spiedel, and Noelle (Richard) Eback; 10 grandchildren, Tyler, Travis, Matthew, Kylee, Vanessa, Makayla, Tara, Skylar, Grayson, Delano, and Shyla; one sister, Margaret “Patsy” (Wilfred) Rebenitsch.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
The family prefers memorials to St. Vincent’s Care Center, Bismarck.
