LaVonne Borner, 97 of New Salem passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Elm Crest Manor.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M., Monday, March 3, 2025 at Peace Church in New Salem, with interment following in the Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
LaVonne Marlys (Hartmann) Borner was born on August 10, 1927 at New Salem to Herman and Lena (Anderson) Hartmann. She attended rural school south of New Salem and the New Salem High School, graduating with the class of 1946. She attended Dickinson State College and received her teaching certificate. She taught in New Salem area schools for 10 years.
She met Lloyd Borner of Stanton at a dance. They married on August 25, 1955 at Bismarck. They were married at the home of the same minister that married LaVonne’s parents. Together they bought a farm next to LaVonne’s parents’ farm. They had one son, Loren born on May 19, 1970 who died 4 months later. A year later they adopted their son John.
They retired from farming in 2000 and moved to town. They spent winters in Arizona traveling. They entered Elm Crest Manor in 2015.
LaVonne belonged to the New Salem Homemakers Club and was very active in all offices of the club. She was a member of Peace Church and the Peace Church Guild. She taught Sunday School and Bible School and worked in the church wherever she was needed. She also belonged to the New Salem Historical Society and Women’s Life.
LaVonne liked to garden, cook and bake. Her specialties were her poppy seed cake and crispies that she shared with family and friends. She enjoyed family gatherings, picnics and birthday parties.
LaVonne is survived by her son John, Bismarck and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Lena; her son, Loren; her husband of 58 years, Lloyd and her brother Condon and sister-in-law Sharon.
