Keven Barstad

June 10, 1957 — January 26, 2015

Keven Barstad, 57, Baldwin, died January 26, 2015 at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, January 30, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, 408 9th Street NW, with Pastor Darrel Lindensmith and Pastor Harold Chin officiating. Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Keven was born June 10, 1957 in Bismarck to Obert and Cynthia (Bruington) Barstad. Raised in Mandan, he attended school at Brentwood in Bismarck and graduated from Sheyenne River Academy in 1975. Keven went on to attend 2 years of college in California and later received his teaching degree from Valley City State. He then taught for 8 years in Karlsruhe, 4 years at Mandan High School, and the past 19 years as the Industrial Arts instructor at the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan until he became ill. Athletic and a love for anything outdoors, Keven enjoyed backpacking in the Rockies every year with his family, rock climbing, kayaking, camping, hunting, fishing, and in 1995 took a canoe through class 4 rapids in Yellowstone with his sons and some friends. Keven also enjoyed gardening and dreamed of piloting a gyro-copter he purchased. A talented craftsman, Keven was excellent at auto body work and metal art. Well-loved and a friend to many, Keven will be missed by all who knew him.

Blessed to have shared his life is his fiancée, Cheri Johnson, Baldwin; two sons, Asa Barstad (friend, Kara Brendel) and Heath Barstad, both of Mandan; three grandchildren, Treyton, Jagger, and Kaileena; his parents, Obert and Cynthia Barstad, Mandan; two brothers, Kim Barstad, Almont and Dr. Trent Barstad, Thief River Falls, MN; niece and nephews, Erica and Jared Schatz, and Tristan (Tiffani) Barstad and their son, Tremayne; special aunt, Kay Sorensen, Mandan; aunt, Alta Schaar, Scranton; uncle, Buzz Bruington, Almont; and countless friends, co-workers, and students.

The family prefers memorial to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3030 Old Red Trail NW, Mandan, ND 58554.
