Joyce Schaffer, 86, died April 18, 2015 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Mandan Seventh Day Adventist Church. Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Joyce Mae James was born in Kenmare ND on March 19, 1929 to Benjamin and Ida (Kleinsmith) James. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Kenmare High School. She later attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN and graduated from Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing. On August 3, 1959, she married Rueben Schaffer in Mandan, ND.
Joyce worked many years as a Registered Nurse at Bismarck Hospital / Medcenter One. She later volunteered at the Adventist Community Services Center in Mandan and provided daycare for her grandchildren. She is remembered as a loving and giving lady, a true Christian. She enjoyed sewing, especially for others, and had a delightful sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rueben; and brothers, Claude and Gordon. She is survived by two sons, Craig (Shelly) Schaffer, Bismarck and Neal Schaffer, Bisbee, ND; 5 grandchildren, Dixie Thoman, Scott Schaffer, Laura Schaffer, Jason Johnson (Ashley), and Kyle Schaffer; and 3 great-grandchildren, Levi Thoman, Riley Johnson, and Avery Johnson.
