Joyce Held, 80, New Salem, died October 6, 2014 at Sanford Health Center, Bismarck.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 10, 2014 at Peace Church, New Salem, with Rev. Joshua Eddy officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery, south of New Salem.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Peace Church in New Salem with a Prayer Service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Joyce was born September 9, 1934, the youngest of four daughters to John Christoph and Eva (Toepke) Kleih. She was raised on a farm southeast of New Salem and attended New Salem schools, graduating in 1952. Joyce studied teaching at Dickinson College. She then taught for a total of six years in one room schoolhouses. On October 19, 1957 she married Marvin Held and they made their home on a farm 12 miles south of New Salem, below the Rocky Ridge. Joyce helped with farming and milking cows. She had a large garden and loved flowers. Talented in the kitchen, she liked to cook and bake, always looking for new recipes. Joyce belonged to the Bethel Church and Bethel Women’s Guild in rural New Salem. A caring person who took care of her parents, aunts, and her husband, Joyce’s genuine love for those close to her will forever be remembered. She gave the best and biggest hugs to her kids and grandkids who will treasure the love she had for them.
Blessed to have shared her life are her four children, Marcy (Kelly) Dawson, Almont, Jeri Lynne (John) Lynch, Jamestown, Bruce (Jodie) Held, Ames, IA, and Brian (Sara) Held, Huron, SD; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Arlene Rusch, New Salem; and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2010; and sisters, Audrey Ecklund and Donna Heid.
