Jayne Kiner

July 22, 1952 — January 19, 2015

Jayne M. Kiner, 62, Mandan, passed away on January 19, 2015 at her home in Mandan with her family by her side.

Services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, January 27 at St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Zanne Ness officiating. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Monday, January 26 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home in Mandan.

Jayne was born in Hammond, IN to Herbert and Avis (Draper) Simons and attended school in Mandan. After graduating from high school in 1970, she attended Dickinson State before transferring to University of North Dakota where she obtained her BS degree in education (biology) in 1974. She taught science and math in high schools in North Dakota, Texas, and Arkansas before returning to college to obtain her Master’s degree in biology from the University of Arkansas. In 2003, she started her college teaching career at Bismarck State College and earned her PhD in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Dakota.

Jayne enjoyed her homes and gardens in various states. She created a warm and welcoming home, no matter where she lived. She designed, planted, and cared for amazing gardens. Her passion extended to teaching, which was her calling in life. She cared deeply for her students and colleagues at all the schools she taught. In addition to gardening, her hobbies included sewing, cloth doll making, beading, embroidery, calligraphy, drawing, and reading. Her love of animals included many pets. She is in heaven with a pack of dogs, several cats, and a few birds.

Jayne will be missed by her husband of 40 years, Gary; her daughter, Diana (Enrique) Gonzalez, and her grandsons, Juan, Gabriel, and Enrique; her sisters, Pamela Simons (Collins Beery) and Melissa Schoellkopf; and her brother-in-law, Paul (Jill) Kiner. Jayne was a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews and their families (Jennifer O'Brien, Marc Schoellkopf, Nadine Simons, Jared Askew, Claudia Schoellkopf, Philipp Schoellkopf). Many of her former students, colleagues, and friends mourn her loss.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharell; her parents-in-law, Phil and Helen; and her brother-in law Richard Schoellkopf.
