Heidi Hertel, 37, Bismarck, died October 10, 2013 at St. Alexius Medical Center after a battle with breast cancer. Her loving family was by her side.

Heidi was born July 2, 1976 in Mandan to Richard J. and Karen (Bliese) Heck. Raised and educated in Mandan, Heidi was involved in sports and always surrounded by friends. Responsible and mature from a young age, she was a friend to everyone she met and would make each friend feel like they were her best friend. A beautiful person inside and out, she had a way about her that got people to see things her way and she always saw the silver lining and best in every situation. Graduating from Mandan High School in 1994, she went on to attend BSC and later Minot College, graduating with a degree in social work. Shortly after graduating, she met Ryan Hertel through mutual friends. Having an instant connection, they were married on September 14, 2001 in Mandan and were blessed with two daughters, Skye and Rayne. First and foremost, Heidi was a dedicated and loving wife and mother, who did everything for her family. Her girls were her world. The girls' favorite things to do with their mom like any girls were getting their nails done, going to Ft. Rice, and shopping!
Heidi worked as an insurance auditor at Coventry Health Care. A great, creative visionary, Heidi missed her calling as an interior decorator. She had great style and taste and friends and family often called upon her for help. From her teen years on, she also did the hair and makeup for friends and family for special occasions, treating each person like a work of art. Of course, she never needed a reason to fix another girl up, often times just taking them aside to pretty them up for her own enjoyment.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2012, Heidi carried on with dignity and grace. She received treatment in Bismarck and went on to clinical trials at Mayo and the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Goodyear, AZ. Heidi returned home to Bismarck where she was surrounded by those she loved through her final days. Heidi loved thunder storms, and as you would expect, a rare October storm the night she took her final breaths left all that knew her feeling like she was saying goodbye. As the sun peaked through the clouds the next morning, it was as if she was showing her bright beautiful smile from Heaven, telling her family she was alright. A tremendous spirit and passion for life and those she loved, Heidi's passing leaves an emptiness that only her continuing love and happy memories can fill.
Blessed to have shared her life is her husband, Ryan Hertel and their daughters, Skye and Rayne, of Bismarck; her mother, Karen Heck of Fort Rice; brothers, Rick (Sherry) Heck and their children, MaeKayla and Levi of Mandan and Shawn (Nikki) Heck and their children, Parker and Preston of Bismarck; father-in-law, Stan Hertel of Fort Yates; sisters and brother-in-law, Tonya Hertel and her children, Monica and Trueth, of Mobridge, SD, James Wickre of Gary, SD, and Amanda (Austin) Roller and their children, Layne and Vayda of Bismarck; her great friends, the Girls of the Class of '94; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends.
Heidi was preceded in death by her father, Richard J. Heck and mother-in-law, Monica Bercier-Wickre.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials for an account for Heidi's daughters, Skye and Rayne.
