Gladys Malmin was born on December 23, 1917 in Hannaford, ND delivered by her father during a snow storm. The daughter of Gabriel and Anna (Lee) Malmin, she graduated from Hannaford High School and attended Jamestown College. Following high school, Gladys worked for several summers at a resort in Tofte, Minnesota, located on the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior. Gladys was a free spirit who traveled the USA with her girlfriends from North Dakota to California.
She married Byron T. Dailey on October 25, 1945. They made their home in Hannaford until 1957, when they moved to Mandan. Widowed in May of 1960, Gladys was left with five children to raise, ranging in age from 10 months to 13 years. Gladys’ greatest asset was a positive attitude which made many things possible for her, including being both mother and father to her children. She carried on bravely following Byron’s death, running an organized and loving home and never feeling sorry for herself. Her children and grandchildren were always her focus in life and the beneficiaries of her unconditional love. As the children and grandchildren married, their spouses were included as well. Gladys treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them and especially loved reading to them. She also substitute taught for several years in Mandan.
Gladys leaves her legacy of love to her daughters, Rita Kopp and Renee (Dan) Ulmer, both of Mandan and Rosemary (John) Swanson of Auburn, Washington; her sons, Tom Dailey of Mandan and John (Sue) Dailey of Columbia, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Kara Kopp and her fiancée, Greg Rise, Michelle (Greg) DeMent, Melanie (Matt) Young, Melissa (Rod) Burklund, Ben Ulmer, Abe (Jacque) Ulmer, and Shawn and Sara Dailey; nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Agnes (Gary) Pomeroy of Seattle, Washington.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Byron; her parents; her son-in-law, Clint Kopp who died in 2009; her brothers, George and Arthur; and a grandson, Sean Ulmer.
