Frank was born July 10, 1920 in Paragould, AR to George A. and Maud (Thurmond) Little. He was raised and attended country school in Greene County, Arkansas. Frank began working on the farm at an early age, learning the importance of hard work and a job well done. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. Frank was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and fought in numerous battles including Guadalcanal and the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy and southern France. It was while on leave from the Navy in 1941 that Frank was asked if he’d like to meet “the prettiest girl in Greene County, Arkansas.” It was love at first sight and he married Pauline Clements on January 29, 1944 in Charleston, SC. After the war ended, they lived on the Washington Bar, a mixed ranch of horses, cattle, and sheep in the Madison Valley near McAllister, Montana. They then moved to a cotton farm in Arkansas near Frank’s childhood home. Next, the couple and their three children moved to a poultry farm in northern Illinois. A few years later, Frank took a job as a park ranger in Kane County, IL. He was there for more than twenty years until his retirement in 1988. They moved to Mandan to be near their sons and their families. Pauline died on January 31, 2009, having shared 65 years of married life together.
Frank enjoyed gardening, photography, woodcraft, and found-object sculpting. He was a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Elks Club. Most honorably, he was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association since 1958.
