A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 11 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Evelyn was born October 25, 1931 in Milnor, the daughter of William H. and Josie (Stanley) Cross. She graduated from high school in Twin Valley, Minnesota in 1949. On April 7, 1950 she was united in marriage to Maynard Kiser. They lived in several places before moving to Mandan in 1958. Evelyn married Duane Sorum on May 4, 1975. She was employed as an office manager by Mandan Hospital and was vice president of A W Lucas Department Store before she and Duane purchased their own business, Dakota ReproGraphics Ltd. (DRG, Ltd.) in 1982. They also owned KS Enterprises. Evelyn retired in 1999.
Evelyn was a believer in life-long education. She took courses when she could while raising her family and working. She graduated from Bismarck State College in 1973 and the University of Mary in 1977. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Mandan Art Association. She was active in the League of Women Voters as well as many other organizations.
Evelyn was a very hardworking and independent woman. She passed this work ethic on to her children. She enjoyed every minute she could with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In the years following her retirement, Evelyn developed a passion for flower gardening. Spring was always a joyous time because it meant she could again plant new flowers for a garden she tried to model after an English garden she once visited.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Reverend Duane Sorum; her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Glenda Kiser of Bismarck; her daughters and sons-in-law, Karol Jablonski of Bismarck and Gary Jablonski of Mandan and Pam and Richard Weng of Mandan; two stepsons, Nathan Sorum (Judy Aarsvold) of Hawley, Minnesota and Matthew Sorum of Fargo; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Slegers of Milnor; three sisters-in-law, Mary Cross of Beaverton, Oregon, Peggy Sorum of Bath, England and Barbara Sorum of Edina, Minnesota; and a special friend, Virginia Perkins.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Donna Gullickson; and two brothers, David and Earl Cross.
