Evelyn was born April 12, 1930 in Freda, near Flasher, to Erick and Ida (Peterson) Lonning. After graduating from Mandan High School in 1949, she began college at Dickinson State and secured her first teaching position at a rural elementary in St. Anthony, Little Heart District. In 1952 Evelyn got her Standard from Dickinson Teachers College and began teaching 3rd and 4th grade in New England, ND. In the summer she went to Yellowstone Park for seasonal work. She spoke very fondly of her times at Yellowstone.
On June 19, 1953 Evelyn married Myron Conitz, settling on a farm in Oliver County. She taught for the Bismarck District in Oliver County. After sons Clifford and Greg were born, the family moved to Hysham, Montana, where Evelyn secured a teaching position. The following year the family returned to North Dakota and built a new farm one mile east of Bluegrass. Evelyn returned to teaching at Bismarck District School until 1966, when she began teaching at New Salem Prairie View Elementary. After 26 years of teaching at the elementary school, Evelyn retired in 1992. Evelyn loved being a teacher and very much enjoyed going to workshops and conventions.
In retirement, Evelyn enjoyed travel throughout the United States. She was the family secretary, historian and archivist, compiling photos and family histories to share with all.
Evelyn is survived by her three grandchildren, Gregory, Tess, and Erin Conitz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron; sons, Clifford and Greg; and her brother, Gordon Lonning.
