Eugene Kaelberer, 90, New Salem, died February 21, 2011 at his home. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Bethel United Church of Christ, south of New Salem. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery when weather permits. Eugene was born August 8, 1920 on the family farm south of New Salem, the oldest son of Christ and Gertrude (Werchau) Kaelberer. He was raised and educated in the area and married Ruth Held on June 18, 1943 at her parent’s home. Eugene and Ruth made their home, farmed together, and raised their daughters in the Bethel community. They moved into New Salem ten years ago. Farming was Eugene’s passion and he was happiest when working in his fields and tending to his cattle. He is survived by two daughters, Corrie (Delbert) Bumann of New Salem and Renelle Branson of Dulzura, California; two grandchildren, Karla Bumann and Ryan (Regina) Bumann; great grandson, Charlie Bumann; brothers, Chester (June) and Chris (Carol), all of New Salem; sister, Marian Berger, Belfield, ND; sister-in-law, Jeanette Kaelberer, New Salem; and many nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years, Ruth, who passed away September 2, 2010; brother, Arnold; sister, Delores Kinnischtzke and her husband Ernest; brother-in-law, Casper Berger; and son-in-law, Dave Braunlich.
