Duane Sorum

February 2, 1931 — September 10, 2015

Rev. Duane Keith Sorum, 84, Mandan, entered eternal life on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at the Sanford Continuing Care Center off Collins in Mandan.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 1:30 pm at First Lutheran Church in Mandan with Rev. Lee Herberg officiating. Always a generous and giving man, per Duane’s wishes, his body has been donated to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

Duane was born February 2, 1931, in Crookston, MN to Andrew and Esther Sorum. He grew up in Crookston and graduated in 1949. He then went on to Concordia College, and served in the Minnesota National Guard for four years. His passion for the Lord led him on to the Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN. He was ordained into the Lutheran Ministry in Crookston in 1960. Duane served congregations in Keene, ND; Hawley, MN; First Lutheran Church in Mandan, ND; and Arnegard, ND. He also served as interim pastor at numerous churches throughout the region.

Duane married Ann Carlson on May 25, 1956, and they were blessed with two adopted sons, Nathan and Matthew. Ann passed away in 1970. He married Evelyn Kiser on May 4, 1975. Evelyn and Duane owned and operated DRG Ltd., an Art and Office Supply and print shop in Bismarck.

A family oriented man, Duane loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their activities. He also cheered on his favorite teams, the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. Evelyn and Duane enjoyed going to plays at Dakota Stage and spending summers at their lake home.

Duane is survived by his sons, Nathan (Lisa) Sorum, Maple Grove, MN, Matthew Sorum, Moorhead, MN, and Keith (Glenda) Kiser, Bismarck; daughters; Karol Jablonski, Bismarck, ND, and Pam (Richard) Weng, Mandan, ND; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Sorum, Bath, Wales UK.

He was preceded in death by his parent, first wife, Ann; second wife, Evelyn; and two brothers, Norman and Gardner.
