Donald Stanton, 74, Mandan, died January 4, 2013 at his home.
Cremation has taken place and a committal service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 7, 2013 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
Donald was born May 11, 1938 in Whiting, IN to Robert and Esther (Galles) Stanton. Raised in Casper, WY, he later moved with his family to Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1956. Don enlisted in the US Navy in 1955 and served as a jet aircraft servicer at the Naval Air Base in Adak, Alaska. Honorably discharged in 1959 he returned home to Mandan where he worked as a yardmaster for BNSF Railroad for over 40 years. Don enjoyed fishing, golfing, artifact hunting, following sports, and spending time with his beloved dog, Kola. Following his retirement, Don embraced technology, learning many new things and liked to surf the internet. He was very selfless and giving, always willing to help out and give whatever he could. Don will be remembered as a fun loving man with a witty sense of humor who liked giving friends a hard time.
Blessed to have shared his life are two daughters, Jodene (Ricky) Hughes, Spruce Pine, NC and Kelly (Tim) Collins, Olympia, WA; four grandchildren, Wendy, Heather, Chandler, and Austyn; two great grandchildren, Brenden and Donovan; two sisters, Patti Menard, San Diego, CA and Toni Stanton, Mandan; three brothers, Bob Stanton, Golden Valley, MN, Jack Stanton, San Diego, CA, and Mike Stanton, Castle Rock, CO; many nieces and nephews, and his dog, Kola.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ted in 2012; sister, Lois Brow; and brother, Bill Stanton.
