Donald D. Hoesel, 72, Mandan, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2014 after a short illness.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 10 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Reverend Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery, south of Mandan, with full military honors. Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Donald was born April 21, 1942 in Mandan to Fred and Ann (Henry) Hoesel. Raised and educated in Oliver County, he graduated from Center High School in 1960. Donald went on to attend Bismarck State College and Dickinson State College. In 1964 he enlisted in the US Army serving as a medical specialist. He was proud of his numerous medals, especially his expert rifle and sharpshooter awards. Donald transferred to the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1993 with the rank of Sargent. He worked for the ND Highway Department and also enjoyed farming. A loving son, brother, uncle, and soul mate, Don loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and gardening. He also liked to play Bingo.
Blessed to have shared his life are his sisters, Bev Wicklund, Eagan, MN and Sandy Sagmiller, Mandan; nephews, John Wicklund Jr., Eagan, MN, Scott Hagel, Vadnais Heights, MN, and Richard Sagmiller, Mandan; his soul mate, Dawnalytah Lappegaard, Mandan; and her children Darick and Dawnalysa Lappegaard and her grandchildren; as well as countless special friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family.
