Dean Michael Unser, 67, Mandan, died June 17, 2015 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, after a long and courageous battle with COPD.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 11:30 am on Monday, June 22, 2015 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, followed by the committal service at 12 noon at the ND Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
Dean was born October 24, 1947 in Mandan to Anton and Isabel (Brilz) Unser. He was raised and educated in Mandan. In October 1966 Dean enlisted in the United States Army and received basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. Dean served in Vietnam and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two overseas bars, Marksman-rifle, and the Purple Heart medal. He was honorably discharged in 1969. Following his discharge he worked for various trucking companies which took him all over the United States. He enjoyed his travels across the nation. He was also a farm laborer for various farmers around Mandan. Dean loved the outdoors, hunting and ice fishing were his passions.
Dean is survived by one brother, Lloyd (Maryn) Unser, Mandan; two sisters, Darlene (Adam) Fleck, Mandan and Lavila (Herman) Meyer, Flasher; one uncle, Leonard (Bonnie) Brilz, Bismarck; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal grandparents, Nick and Albertina Brilz; and paternal grandparents, Conrad and Magdalena Unser.
Memorials may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery or the Wounded Warriors Fund.
