Arlene Mavis (Walen) Schmautz, 82, of Mandan, died November 29, 2013 at Sanford off Sunset, Mandan.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Reverend Ron Hildahl officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Arlene was born December 7, 1930 to Elmer and Helen (Dybwad) Walen, in McHenry, ND. Raised and educated in Glenfield, ND she graduated from Glenfield High School. Arlene met the love of her life, LeRoy Schmautz, at age 16 while they were both patients at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo. They corresponded for four years while LeRoy worked in Carson, ND. Arlene moved to Bismarck and attended Capital Commercial College. Four years later she became his bride as they were married on June 5, 1955 in Glenfield.
They made their home in Mandan where she did clerical work for the Oscar H. Will Co. and for the State Highway Department. She later stayed home to raise their children and as a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, oil painting, crafts, playing piano, singing in the church choir, and bible study, as her faith was very important to her. A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Arlene will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
Blessed to have shared her life is her husband of 58 years, LeRoy Schmautz, Mandan; her daughter, Sherry (Brent) Mossbarger of Midlothian, TX; her son, Wayne (Lori) Schmautz of Mandan; three grandchildren, Eric Schmautz, Danielle Schmautz, and Austin Mossbarger; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Walen, Cooperstown, Adeline Walen, Carrington, and Carol Walen, Glenfield; LeRoy’s siblings, Leonard Schmautz, Mandan, Lyle (Ardis) Schmautz, Bismarck, and Mary Beth (Rudy) Marohl, Bradenton, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Arthur, Harry, Ernest, Raymond, and Andrew; and her sisters-in-law, Caroline Schmautz and Mildred (John) Brucker.
